2: EASE THEIR FEARS

When we are scared, it’s almost unimaginable to think that anything could provide a solution for our problems. That’s what fear does to us.

Prior to 2020, when I would share about this concept, I would cite the Great Depression. During the 1930s fear was so rampant that much of the nation fell into a deep state of hopelessness. They lost the will to find jobs, to improve themselves, and often the will to live. Regardless of how you feel about his policies, one thing that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt did well was to help ease the fears of his fellow Americans. He boldly told the American people that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” and regularly communicated with them via his famous Fireside Chats over the radio.

I’m now writing this amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the fear and uncertainty that we’ve faced is still very real and raw. We’ve lost loved ones, suffered lockdowns, and seen a fundamental shift in interpersonal relationships. Especially in the early days of the pandemic, when much remained unknown about the virus, there was a genuine sense of dread among much of the population, including myself. Was it safe to pump gas with my bare hands? Could our dog spread the virus? Would we ever gather together again as a family?

“The faster you can ease their fears, the sooner your followers will begin to feel hope that there is actually a solution to their problem.
